  36. Along the same lines, Joe Veverka once pointed out an article to me in the
  37. old U. of A. Asteroids book (Tom Gehrels, editor, I believe) written by
  38. somebody around the turn of the century.  It proposed that an asteroid
  39. might be diverted from it's path and used in an impact with the Earth to
  40. excavate the Panama Canal.  I guess Gerhels just included it as a joke...
  41. one would hope!

  61. The responses were mixed, with a few people recommending
  62. an IBM PC based program (.exe, no source).  Nope, sorry,
  63. I'm not interested in a PC .exe file.  Files compressed
  64. into .zip format aren't much use either.  I could work 
  65. with Stuffit (.sit), .tar or the source...
  66.  
  67. However, several people did respond with usefull information.
  68. Since I believe in giving credit where credit is due, they
  69. were:

  71.    Jonathan McDowell - Who gave me exactly what I asked for:
  72.         A complete formula that converts from the orbital
  73.         elements & elapsed mission time to lat/lon & 
  74.         altitude.  This is exactly what I wanted!

  77.         for orbital calculations resides on 
  78.         platypus.uofs.edu in the pub/HAM-RADIO subdirectory.

  125. In a way, every time you set up a mechanism to fund research, that
  126. research inherits the goals, and some of the problems, of whatever
  127. that mechanism is, whether it be public trust, corporate funding,
  128. or secret slush fund.  The inventors you mention funded themselves out
  129. of their entrepenuerial businesses, which gave them the freedom to
  130. pursue ideas "outside the mainstream".
  131.  
  132. starting a business to fund your own rsearch is definatly the best
  133. way to go for truly free R & D.

  152. mid-70's, I believe - and the proposal was for a *Nicaragua* canal.

  168. The new newsgroup sci.geo.meteorology has passed by an overwhelming
  169. amount.  The official count was:

  171. 178 YES
  172.  17  NO

  174. By usenet newsgroup creation guidelines, a group must have 100 more
  175. YES votes than NO votes, and the YES votes must have 2/3 of the
  176. majority (66.6%).  Sci.geo.meteorology had 161 more YES votes than NO
  177. votes, and the YES votes had 91% of the majority.  Therefore,
  178. sci.geo.meteorology passes.
  179.  
  180. Despite the mailing problems we had with a server for our domain, I
  181. think that everyone who wanted to vote, did vote.  Sci.geo.meteorology
  182. doesn't seem to have a lot of opposition, as seen clearly by the votes
  183. counted.  So the green light is on for some awesome weather
  184. discussion!
